A collection of works by African-American artist Faith Ringgold. It was planned by the Serpentine Galleries in London and was published in conjunction with a tour exhibition held at the Swedish contemporary art museum "Bildmuseet" in 2020 and at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland in 2021.
The artist, writer and activist has explored and broken the perception of identity and gender equality through story quilts and paintings depicting African American lives, as well as feminist and civil rights movements.
This exhibition focuses on a series of paintings, story quilts and political posters from the 1960s to the present day. This book was published as an expanded version when an exhibition was held at the Glenstone Museum of Art, and in addition to its works, essays contributed by artist and scholar Michele Wallace, as well as interviews with the author. In an interview with curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, he talks about his life in Harlem, the civil rights movement in the 1960s, sources of inspiration, and his passion for exercising storytelling and freedom of speech.
