A collection of works that explore traditional African art and their aesthetics. It was planned by the Art Institute of Chicago in 2022 and was published in conjunction with a tour exhibition held at the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas. This book is an ambitious book that focuses on the perspectives of Indigenous peoples, focusing on the judgments and vocabulary of the people of the community who created and used traditional African art. It explores the affinity of intercultural cultures that span the African continent, while respecting the local context. The main purpose of this project is to rethink Western values in these arts in terms of aesthetics and finances.
The book contains nearly 300 works from collections from around the world and important collections at the Museum of Art Chicago. It focuses on the sculpture heritage of cultures in the Sub-Saharan Africa region of West and Central Africa (regions south of the Sahara Desert), and also includes reference examples of artistic traditions related to East and South Africa, as well as textiles and objects designed for homes, rituals and decorations.
